National Triathlon Training Camp
The National Triathlon Training Camp
(NTTC) held the world's first
triathlon camp in May of 1983. Twenty-two participants came to a
place called Cottontail Ranch in Malibu, California for the first
organized triathlon training weekend in the sport’s history. On hand were several of the
top names of the day – Pat Hines, Mark Montgomery, Kim Bushong, and
Annie Dandoy. Also on
hand were a reporter and a photographer from the Los Angeles Times. A feature article in the paper’s
View Section the following week helped launch our media
coverage. A small
article in Sports
Illustrated followed several weeks later. We moved camp locations in July
of 1983 to the Irvine campus of the University of California. CNN was on hand this time
to cover the camp, providing NTTC with its first television
coverage! |
In 1985, our
programs went national with our first East Coast camp, an event
that was written up in a feature article in the Washington
Post. In the years
that followed until 1994, NTTC events were held in major markets
throughout the United States, including California, South Carolina,
Florida, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New Mexico, Ohio, Vermont,
Texas and Hawaii. Our
events have received critical acclaim and high marks from the media
and experts in the sport. But, the opinion
we value most is that of our camp and clinic participants. We carefully track the
feedback and rankings given to us in post-camp surveys. In twelve years of NTTC events,
trainees ranked our programs an average of 8.83 out of 10 for overall
quality and our staff an average of 8.96 out of 10 for knowledge and
professionalism. (Pictured at Right: A full-page,

Our events provide a top-quality forum for the exchange of ideas and information concerning triathlon training, racing, nutrition, and injury prevention. We give participants the opportunity to learn from and train with select world-class triathletes in both large and small group settings. In addition to Team NTTC pro athletes, former Ironman race winners Dave Scott, Mark Allen, Julie Moss, John Howard, and Ray Browning have all served on staff at NTTC camps.
